About the role
We are looking for reliable and engaging Intro to Coding Instructors to lead our game development-themed after-school enrichment program in Oakland for Fall 2026. You'll help elementary students unlock their creativity by teaching them to build their own interactive games, animations, and digital stories. Instructors should be comfortable working with younger students, translating foundational coding principles like loops, events, and logic into fun, game-based projects, and keeping the classroom high-energy and accessible. Responsibilities: Guide students through beginner-friendly block coding and game creation platforms such as Scratch and MakeCode. Help students design characters, code mechanics like movement, scoring, and collision, and debug their original games. Maintain a supportive, energetic, structured environment where students feel comfortable experimenting and learning from mistakes. Foster a positive culture of playtesting, constructive feedback, and peer problem-solving. Ensure student safety and proper care of equipment. Submit a brief after-class summary following each session. Coordinate professionally with program staff and school site coordinators. Schedule: Wednesdays, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Grades 3-5. Start date September 9, 2026.
What we’re looking for
Prior experience working with elementary-aged children in grades 3-5 preferred. Familiarity with block-based coding, basic game design concepts, STEM, or education is a strong plus. Excellent communication, patience, enthusiasm, and strong classroom management skills. Punctual, dependable, and capable of leading a classroom independently. Applicant must reside in Oakland or within 20 miles of Oakland to ensure reliable, on-time arrival for after-school hours.
