About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic After-School Gardening & STEAM Instructor to lead hands-on garden and science enrichment classes for elementary students in San Francisco. You'll guide small groups through planting, growing, harvesting, and connected science and art projects that bring the natural world to life. This role suits students and recent graduates in education, environmental science, early childhood studies or biology who have worked with young children and want regular weekday hours. Curriculum and lesson materials are provided. Responsibilities: Lead small-group gardening and STEAM classes for TK to 5th grade students after the school day. Facilitate garden science (planting, seed starting, composting, soil and pollinator studies), nature exploration (observation journals, plant and insect identification, seasonal cycles), STEAM connections (simple experiments, garden-based art, measurement and data collection), and safe cooking and tasting using produce grown in the garden. Maintain the school garden space and ensure tools are used and stored safely. Foster a safe, inclusive outdoor learning environment. Prepare materials and handle clean-up. Track attendance and communicate updates. Schedule: After school, approximately 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Start date September 28, 2026.

What we’re looking for

Experience working directly with elementary-age children through teaching, tutoring, camps, after-school programs, enrichment, mentoring, coaching or youth development. Strong communication and classroom-management skills. Comfortable leading and supervising groups outdoors. Able to follow provided curriculum while adapting to student needs. Applicant must reside in San Francisco or within 20 miles. Must commit to the Fall 2026 schedule, pass a background check and complete fingerprinting/live scan. Preferred: Background in education, child development, early childhood studies, environmental science or biology. Experience with school or community gardens, urban farming, or environmental education.
