A Colorful Summer in the Kitchen at Acorn Woodland Elementary
At Acorn Woodland Elementary in Oakland, cooking joined the summer enrichment mix with five weeks of Digital Dreamers culinary classes. Through our partnership with Bay Area Community Resources (BACR), we brought a menu that made everyday ingredients the starting point for something students could make themselves.
Fresh ingredients, a little folding, and a frozen finish
Rainbow salad, banana split cups, mango crepe rolls, watermelon smoothies, and DIY ice cream gave the summer its own flavor. The recipes offered different ways to work with fruit: combine it in a salad, build a dessert cup, tuck it into a crepe, or blend it into a refreshing drink. Familiar ingredients had a few new tricks up their sleeves.
We kept each recipe approachable, breaking the preparation into steps students could follow and take part in. A crepe roll, for example, makes the assembly part of the project: deciding how much filling to use and folding it into a serving. Making ice cream brought another familiar favorite into the classroom, this time with the preparation included.
Acorn's summer culinary program made room for practical learning alongside the treats. Following a sequence, working with ingredients, and assembling a finished dish were all part of the experience. With BACR and Acorn, we helped bring a hands-on addition to summer learning, one with something to taste at the end.
