From Animation Frames to Model Stars at Castro Valley Y-Kids
Our summer partnership with Castro Valley Y-Kids paired two programs with a creative destination: make a scene move, then put a robot on course. Digital Dreamers brought Stop Motion Studio in June and Star Gazers robotics in July as part of the YMCA site's summer enrichment.
Bringing an idea into motion
Stop Motion Studio introduced the craft behind animation. Small changes between photographs create movement when the images play together, making the order and size of each adjustment part of the project. It is a playful way to see how a larger result can grow from many deliberate little steps.
Star Gazers moved the challenge onto a robot course. LEGO robots had model stars to retrieve and constellation layouts to navigate. The space theme gave distance, turns, and coding commands a job to do: get the star where it belonged.
Across both programs, the creative idea depended on how it was put together. A scene needed its frames in sequence; a robot needed its moves in order. Castro Valley Y-Kids' summer program made space for both, bringing animation and coding into camp with a bit of movie-making and a bit of stargazing along the way.
