Road Trips and Deep Dives: Summer STEAM at Marin Y-Kids
At Marin Y-Kids in Albany, our YMCA partnership gave two summer themes room to unfold over several days. Digital Dreamers' Road Trip Robotics ran June 23, 26, followed by Deep Dive: Oceans & Engineering from June 29, July 2. One explored destinations on a map; the other looked beneath the ocean's surface.
A road trip powered by code
Road Trip Robotics divided the United States into regions, using maps and state-marked destinations to shape robot-driving challenges. Geography supplied the places to go, while coding supplied the route. Distance, turns, and the order of commands became the tools for getting there.
A new depth, a new project
Deep Dive moved from the sunlight zone toward darker and deeper ocean habitats. Jellyfish-inspired lanterns, LED circuits, deep-sea scenes, and an ocean-layer wind chime gave the theme several forms to take. Light, color, and construction helped turn the ocean study into something campers could make.
The multi-day format gave Marin's summer program a thread to follow. Each activity belonged to a larger exploration, whether across a region or down through an ocean layer. Through our partnership with Marin Y-Kids, we connected coding, geography, science, and creative projects in a summer itinerary with plenty of places to go.
