About the role
We're seeking an enthusiastic and dependable After-School Chess Instructor to lead engaging chess classes for elementary students in Pleasant Hill. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children and helping students develop strategic thinking, patience, and problem-solving skills through the game of chess. Curriculum and lesson plans are provided, allowing you to focus on creating an engaging, supportive, and enjoyable learning experience for every student. Responsibilities: Lead engaging after-school chess classes for elementary students. Teach chess fundamentals, strategies, and good sportsmanship. Guide students through lessons, puzzles, and friendly matches. Encourage critical thinking, patience, confidence, and respectful competition. Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive classroom environment. Prepare instructional materials and chess sets before each class. Communicate professionally with school staff and the program team. Submit a brief after-class session report following each class. Schedule: Fall 2026 Afterschool Program (Sep 9 - Dec 16, 2026).
What we’re looking for
Experience working with children in an educational, enrichment, camp, or youth development setting is preferred. Candidates should possess strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills and enjoy creating engaging learning experiences. Applicants must maintain clear and timely communication with the program team, submit brief after-class session reports. Successfully pass a background check, complete all required onboarding and school compliance training, be authorized to work in the United States. Have reliable transportation to assigned school sites. Be able to commit to the Fall 2026 program schedule. Preferred: Experience teaching or coaching chess to children. Strong knowledge of chess fundamentals and strategy. Experience leading after-school, enrichment, camp, or youth programs. Teaching credential or educational background is a plus.
