Bringing Computer Science into the School Day at Lafayette Elementary
This spring, we partnered with Lafayette Elementary in San Francisco to bring STEAM with a Computer Science focus into the school day. Through Digital Dreamers STEAM Academy, we explored the thinking behind instructions, patterns, and step-by-step problem-solving.
Putting instructions in order
Our approach connected sequencing with breaking a task into smaller parts. Considering what comes first, what follows, and which details need to be clear offered a practical way to examine how a computer follows directions.
Finding the step that needs changing
Reviewing a sequence gives a reason to look closely at each instruction and compare it with the intended result. We made room to reconsider a step and work through an approach systematically. Our in-school partnership brought computational thinking into the classroom through active participation.
