From the Camp Kitchen to a Rescue Mission at Strandwood Y-Kids
At Strandwood Y-Kids in Pleasant Hill, our summer YMCA partnership connected cooking with two themed robotics programs. Digital Dreamers' lineup began with The Colorful Kitchen, then made room for Rescue Mission Robotics and Star Gazers.
Good instructions go a long way
Culinary brought ingredients and preparation steps to the camp table. Assembling a serving gave the recipe a visible finish, with each step contributing to something children could help make.
Robotics introduced a different kind of instruction. Rescue Mission Robotics used LEGO robots and a model course to give navigation a purpose. Star Gazers changed the mission, adding model stars to retrieve and a constellation layout to work toward. A rescue route and a trip to collect a star call for different moves, so the theme shaped the coding challenge.
Cooking and robotics may use very different materials, but both give sequence a practical role. Our work with Strandwood Y-Kids brought that connection into summer enrichment through food and imaginative missions. The result was a lineup with a little kitchen creativity and a few destinations for the robots to explore.
