About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic, curious and engaging instructor to lead Mission Mystery, a hands-on science enrichment program for elementary students in Newark. In this interactive STEM program, students become junior science investigators, using observation, experimentation, evidence and logical reasoning to solve age-appropriate mysteries. Topics may include fingerprints, chromatography, handwriting analysis, invisible messages, mystery powders, patterns, measurement and microscopy. The emphasis is on scientific inquiry and discovery, not crime or graphic content. Students learn how scientists observe carefully, gather information, test ideas, compare evidence and reason toward conclusions. Curriculum and lesson materials are provided. Responsibilities: Lead engaging after-school science and STEM classes. Teach hands-on lessons using the provided curriculum. Facilitate age-appropriate experiments, investigations and mystery challenges. Guide students as they collect, observe, compare and interpret evidence. Help students distinguish between observations, evidence, assumptions and conclusions. Adapt activities for different learning styles. Maintain a positive, inclusive, organised and safe classroom. Prepare materials and activity stations before each session and assist with cleanup. Schedule: Weekday afternoons. Start date September 21, 2026.

What we’re looking for

Experience working with children through teaching, tutoring, camps, after-school programs, STEM programs, science museums, enrichment, mentoring, coaching or youth development is strongly preferred. Interest or background in forensic science, biology, chemistry, STEM/STEAM, science education or hands-on learning. Strong communication and classroom-management skills. Curious, patient, organised, enthusiastic and dependable. Applicant must reside in Newark or within 20 miles of Newark. Formal forensic science experience is not required — a strong science background and enthusiasm for hands-on teaching is what matters.
