Kitchen Projects and Coding Adventures at Mission Valley Y-Kids
Mission Valley Y-Kids in Fremont welcomed a range of Digital Dreamers programs through our summer YMCA partnership. Culinary, STEAM, robotics, and yoga all had a place in the lineup, bringing different materials and challenges into the camp day.
A recipe, an experiment, and a route to follow
The Colorful Kitchen started with ingredients and food preparation. Junior Earth Scientists moved into natural-hazard topics, using a model-volcano experiment and building activities to give science a hands-on form.
Road Trip Robotics supplied maps and state-marked destinations for LEGO robot navigation. Star Gazers changed the scenery, asking robots to retrieve model stars and arrange them within constellations. The themes made the route part of the story: code was the means of getting somewhere and completing a task.
Movement and the world around us
Yoga and Play brought a movement session into the season, followed by the environmental STEAM theme of Eco Explorers in August. These additions extended the lineup beyond the kitchen and robot course, making space for physical activity and another area of science.
Our partnership with Mission Valley Y-Kids brought several kinds of enrichment into one summer setting. There were recipes to work through, materials to build with, and destinations to program. That variety gave the season its character, with a new kind of project waiting at the next stop.
