Summer Cooking and Robots on a Mission at Valhalla Y-Kids
Valhalla Y-Kids in Pleasant Hill paired culinary with robotics through our Digital Dreamers summer partnership with the YMCA. The Colorful Kitchen opened the lineup in June, with Rescue Mission Robotics and July's Star Gazers adding two distinct coding challenges.
A kitchen project and two robot destinations
The culinary program brought food preparation into manageable recipe steps, giving ingredients a path toward a finished serving. It was an everyday setting for making something through a sequence of actions.
Rescue Mission Robotics brought LEGO Spike Prime driving bases onto a model course, with natural-hazard resources framing the mission. Navigation had a purpose: travel the route and reach the right place. Star Gazers gave the robots a new assignment, retrieving model stars and placing them within constellation layouts. The destination changed, and so did the moves needed to get there.
The programs gave Valhalla's summer enrichment both a familiar starting point and an imaginative one. Food preparation connected the work to everyday life; rescue and space themes gave coding a story to follow. Through our partnership with Valhalla Y-Kids, we brought those approaches together in hands-on projects with something concrete to make or accomplish.
