About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic, curious and engaging instructor to lead Mission Mystery, a hands-on forensic science and STEM enrichment program for 1st to 5th grade students in Santa Rosa. In this interactive STEM program, students become junior science investigators, using observation, experimentation, evidence and logical reasoning to solve age-appropriate mysteries. Topics may include fingerprints, chromatography, handwriting analysis, invisible messages, mystery powders, patterns, measurement and microscopy. The emphasis is on scientific inquiry and discovery, not crime or graphic content. Curriculum and lesson materials are provided. Responsibilities: Lead engaging after-school forensic science and STEM classes. Teach hands-on lessons using the provided curriculum and activity plans. Facilitate age-appropriate experiments, investigations and mystery challenges. Guide students as they collect, observe, compare and interpret evidence. Encourage curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration and scientific reasoning. Support students in explaining how evidence led them to a conclusion. Maintain a positive, inclusive, organised and safe classroom. Prepare materials and activity stations before each session. Schedule: Weekday afternoons, Fall 2026. Grades 1-5. Start date September 10, 2026.

What we’re looking for

Experience working with children through teaching, tutoring, camps, after-school programs, STEM programs, science museums, enrichment, mentoring, coaching or youth development is strongly preferred. Interest or background in forensic science, biology, chemistry, STEM/STEAM or science education. Strong communication and classroom-management skills. Curious, patient, organised, enthusiastic and dependable. Applicant must reside in Santa Rosa or within 20 miles of Santa Rosa. Formal forensic science experience is not required — a strong science background and enthusiasm for hands-on teaching is what matters.
