A Taste of Summer at Schafer Park in Hayward
Schafer Park was the setting for our summer culinary work with Hayward Unified School District. Digital Dreamers brought cooking into the program with a menu built around fresh ingredients, manageable preparation, and a few familiar treats students could help make.
From rainbow salad to DIY ice cream
Rainbow salad, banana split cups, mango crepe rolls, watermelon smoothies, and DIY ice cream gave each recipe its own place in the summer. There was something to combine, something to assemble, something to fold, and something to blend. Fruit did a little of everything.
We used that variety to keep the preparation at the center of the classes. A banana split cup turns individual ingredients into a dessert through assembly; a mango crepe roll adds the task of containing the filling. Even a familiar treat becomes a different experience when you take part in making it.
Our partnership with Schafer Park and Hayward Unified brought those everyday kitchen experiences into summer enrichment. The menu was lighthearted, with practical steps behind it: follow the recipe, portion the ingredients, and bring the serving together. DIY ice cream fit right in, a summer favorite with a making-it-yourself twist.
