Cooking and Learning at Fred T. Korematsu Discovery Academy this Spring
We brought Culinary enrichment to Fred T. Korematsu Discovery Academy in Oakland this spring. Our Digital Dreamers STEAM Academy program invited students into food preparation, with opportunities to take part in the steps leading up to a finished dish.
Getting the ingredients ready
Our approach connected gathering ingredients, measuring portions, and combining components with following a recipe. Each task had a purpose, and the order of preparation mattered. We kept attention on the process so that making the food was part of the learning.
More to notice along the way
Texture, flavor, and the changes that happen when ingredients come together offered plenty to explore. We paired that curiosity with practical routines such as sharing materials, organizing the workspace, and cleaning up. Through our partnership with Korematsu, we brought everyday cooking skills into a hands-on enrichment experience.
